Concussions
Concussions are head trauma injuries that temporarily affect the functioning of one’s brain. These injuries can range in severity from mild to severe, but a single concussion should not be life-threatening. When concussions add up, however, they can pose serious threats to the victim. Multiple concussions can cause permanent and debilitating brain damage.
Causes of Concussions
Concussion injuries are caused by significant blows to the head. When the head suffers a strong impact force, the brain is jostled around inside the skull, which causes it to bump up against the inside of the cranium. This movement and shaking can cause bleeding in and around the brain, resulting in mild brain injury.
Some of the more common impact forces that cause concussions are the following:
- Sports injuries
- Automobile accidents
- Bicycle wrecks
- Slip and fall accidents
- Assault and physical violence
- Falling objects
If you have suffered a concussion as the result of someone else’s negligence or malicious intent, then you may have the right to claim damages. The families of children who suffer a concussion injury while playing sports as the result of a supervisor’s failure to provide effective equipment or adequate supervision also have the right to compensation.
Concussion Symptoms
The symptoms of concussions often include any combination of the following:
- Headache
- Loss of consciousness
- Memory loss
- Vomiting
- Convulsions
- Unusual eye movements
- Pupils of unequal sizes
- Confusion
Concussion symptoms will vary depending on the severity of the injury.
