The LATCH System
When transporting your child, you want to be certain that the car seat you are using and the method of securing it are as safe as possible. In response to widespread debate about car seat safety, experts designed the LATCH system in 2003 to help parents secure their children properly in cars. LATCH stands for “lower anchors and tethers for children,” which serves as an alternative to seatbelt installation.
If your child has been injured because of a faulty car seat, or because a third party installed the car seat incorrectly, you may be eligible to receive compensation. What is the LATCH System?
The LATCH system was created because people were improperly installing car seats with seatbelts. Car seats manufactured after 2003 typically accommodate both LATCH installation as well as seatbelt installation. If either method is executed properly, they are equally safe. The LATCH system is easier, however, because it has a tether on the top and on either side of the car seat that attach to anchors in the car.
If your car does was made before 2000, there is a chance it will not have the anchor systems necessary for a LATCH security system. In most cases, car manufacturers will install a kit to enable the latest in car seat security; however, if this is not an option, seatbelt installation is just as safe when executed properly.
