Possible Seat Belt Legislation

Posted on May 19th, 2009 No Comments

In Texas, the only people required to wear a seat belt are the driver, the front seat passenger and any passenger under the age of 17. However, new legislation may change this to include back seat passengers as well.

Senator Kirk Watson is endorsing a bill that would mandate that all passengers wear seat belts. If passed and signed into law by the governor, the law will take effect on September 1. However, regardless of whether or not it becomes law, wearing your seat belt is always a good idea.

Bike Safety

Posted on May 14th, 2009 No Comments

Bicycles and the city of Austin go hand in hand. No matter where you are, you can probably spot a cyclist. Because of this, it is very important for motorists and cyclists to share the road.

As a motorist, it is absolutely necessary to be on the lookout for cyclists and to interact with them safely. Not doing this often results in crashes that can mean serious injury or death for the cyclist, and in some cases can mean legal ramifications for the motorist.

As a cyclist, it is important to remember that the rules of the road also apply to you. Cutting through traffic and running red lights and stop signs puts you in a position to be hit.

Bill to Increase Booster Seat Age

Posted on May 12th, 2009 No Comments

A bill that just passed in the Texas House would change the age at which children can stop using booster seats. The current law requires that any child under 5 and shorter than 3 feet use a booster seat.

The bill proposes raising the age to 8 and the height to 4 feet 9 inches. The bill now goes on to the Senate for approval. If it passes, it may save many children's lives in traffic accidents.
