UT student hit by car, killed while jogging

A UT student jogging on West 15th Street Friday was hit and killed by a car. According to police reports, Brianna Nichole Becker was jogging on the sidewalk when she tired to cross the street but was hit by an sports utility vehicle. 

At the time of the accident, no charges had been filed. Police also said they will investigate the matter further.

National Guard Humvee flies off road, leads to six-car crash

A National Guard Humvee was driving down Interstate 35 in the rain when it went airborne and crashed into oncoming traffic. The accident resulted in a six-vehicle wreck that killed a National Guard soldier and two other drivers. 

After hitting the first car, the Humvee hit a trailer truck and a garbage truck, which led to three incidental accidents. The wreck closed the interstate for about 3 hours.

Police chase leads to car accidents, three injuries in Austin

Two carjacking suspects led police on a short chase Friday morning. The alleged highjackers attempted to evade police, driving from the 2400 block of Cromwell circle to the intersection of 38th street and I-35, where they were arrested.

During the car chase, the suspects hit a man in a wheelchair, and later crashed into a sports utility vehicle containing a father and his daughter, according to police reports.

Brownsville family settles construction lawsuit with Texas construction company

A lawsuit regarding the 2007 collapse of a wall in Brownsville was settled Aug. 28. The confidential settlement was reached between site contractors Rental Service Corp. and the family of Margarito Negron, who was killed when a wall fell during the construction of a T-Mobile store. 

The lawsuit alleged that the company failed to provide adequate safety measures, used faulty products, and was negligent in other areas of construction. In 2008, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined the company for serious violations related to the wall's collapse.

Man dies in fight at Austin convenience store

A fight last Monday night resulted in the death of a 27-year-old Austin man. Jonathan Frank Arrellano and six others were involved in a fight at the corner of E. 51st St. and Manor Road.

According to witnesses, the fight broke out when two groups began giving each other "disparaging looks." As the two sides shouted expletives at one another, the shouting escalated and eventually led to both sides beating each other pipes. 

Arrellano sustained serious head trauma in the fight and was taken to Dell Children's Hospital, but died while receiving treatment.

Man injured in bike accident

A man from Austin was injured when his bike was struck by a car Monday. Michael Merriott was biking west on Oakland Avenue when his bike hit the side of a car. 

When police authorities arrived to the scene, they found Merriott on the ground bleeding and not wearing a helmet. The man driving the car said he did not see Merriott before the accident, and police officials said they would not likely cite the driver.

Man killed in drunk driving accident

A man was driving his rental car to his hotel when he was hit and killed by a drunken driver Tuesday. Robert Joel Benn was in Austin on business when his car was struck at the intersection of Bolm Rd. and Airport Blvd. 

The man driving the car that hit Benn's rental was being chased by police when he T-boned Benn's rental. The police officer chasing the driver said he began following the car when he noticed it swerving erratically. 

During the pursuit, the driver threw beer cans out of the car and began to speed up. A short time later, the driver ran a red light and hit Benn's car. 

Police officials confirmed that the driver was drunk and believed that the officer followed the proper procedure, although his case is being reviewed.
