Motorcyclist killed in Austin accident

Posted on June 18th, 2010 No Comments

An initial investigation showed that a collision between a Honda and an orange Harley Davidson motorcycle, resulted in the death of the motorcyclist Tuesday.  The accident occurred when the silver Honda, which was traveling southbound on Emerald Forest Drive slowed down to turn left onto a side street.  The motorcycle was also traveling southbound on the same road and did not slow down in time to brake.  It collided into the back of the car and the motorcyclist was ejected from his vehicle.

Emergency Medical Services immediately transported the biker to the University Medical Center with serious injuries.  He was pronounced dead on Wednesday.  The motorcyclist was found to have alcohol in his system.   The driver of the Honda went uninjured and no charges are set to be made in this incident.  The case is still under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of all those involved in this tragic accident.

A Central Texas police officer was injured when a speeding vehicle he was chasing caused him to strike a parked pick-up truck at approximately 9 a.m. on Wednesday.  The officer was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco via ambulance.  Neither the officer's name nor the degree of his injuries have been released to the public yet.  Authorities say that the injured officer was in pursuit of the speeding car when another vehicle pulled out in front of him, causing him to swerve to avoid a collision.  Instead, the patrol car struck the parked truck.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Texas Avenue and Pearl Street in Mart, Texas.  The chase occurred along State Highway 164 when the officer was trying to stop a vehicle that was traveling 17 miles per hour over the speed limit.  The speeder got away and no traffic citations have been issued.  Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating the incident.

An Austin man had to be extricated from a Nissan Sentra after it collided with a Jeep Cherokee Wednesday.  20-year-old Nicholas Hummel-Pirmantgen, the passenger in the Sentra, was then taken to the Austin Medical Center where he was treated for injuries sustained during the accident.  The wreck occurred on Eight Avenue and Seventh Street at approximately 3:30 p.m.  The driver of the Sentra, 18-year-old Lance Eastman did not yield to the Jeep as he turned left onto Seventh Street.  The Cherokee driver, who was headed east on Eighth Avenue, collided with the passenger side of the Sentra.

The drivers of both vehicles were not injured.  Hummel-Pirmantgen remains in stable condition at the medical center.  The degree of his injuries has not been released to the public but he is expected to recover.

Austin considers updating stoplights for safety

Posted on June 9th, 2010 No Comments

An Austin police officer responding to a call on Thursday caused an accident at a busy intersection.  Sources say the intersection was not fitted with an emergency light sensor, a device that controls the stoplight when it is triggered by emergency vehicles.  The officer was unable to change the light from red to green, and was forced to take a left on red, crashing into the Civic. The Austin police department reports that accidents of this nature are rare and in the past year there have only been three accidents of this nature.

A surprising 40 percent of Austin intersections aren't equipped with emergency light sensors.  The city is looking to update all lights so that they can include the device used to help emergency vehicles.  Police remind Austin drivers that no matter what color the traffic light is, it is always necessary to slow down and pull over to the right when emergency vehicle lights are flashing.  It is also important to keep the music in your car low so that you can hear sirens.
