Earlier this month, six people were injured in an accident between a car and a Manor Independent School District school bus. The accident occurred near the intersection of U.S. Highway 290 and Parmer Lane.

The bus was carrying between 25 and 30 students on their way to school when a sedan rear-ended it at around 8:15 a.m. The bus was traveling eastbound on U.S. 290 when it was hit.

This weekend, a man visiting Austin from Charlotte, North Carolina was killed in a pedestrian accident on Guadalupe north of the University of Texas campus. The driver that struck the man, 61, and another pedestrian, 21, has been charged with intoxication assault and intoxicated manslaughter.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Guadalupe and W. 31st St. at around 7 p.m. on Sunday. Witnesses to the accident told police that the 59-year-old driver ran her Lexus SUV into a white BMW before driving onto the sidewalk, and into a bus stop where the pedestrians were standing. The SUV continued for another block before becoming stuck in between a traffic light post and the Four Sons’ Quality Cleaners sign.

Police reported that the driver had been discharged from Seton Medical Center earlier that day and that she seemed to be heavily medicated. The driver was arrested and booked into the Travis County Jail. Records indicate that she failed field sobriety tests. The 21-year-old pedestrian was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge for treatment of unspecified injuries and was listed as being in fair condition on Monday.

This week, the family of a worker killed in a tragic accident on Saturday filed a wrongful death lawsuit against his employer. The 26-year-old victim worked for Dallas Group of America at a plant in Texas City.

Medical examiners at the Galveston County Medical Examiner determined the man’s cause of death to be asphyxia. Officials said that the man had become entangled and crushed in packaging machinery at the plant, making him unable to breath.

The defendant creates and packages synthetic materials used in the food industry. Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are investigating at Dallas Group’s Texas City plant. The agency has 6 months to investigate the fatality.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and friends.

1 million packs of Pfizer birth control recalled

Posted on Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 5:14 pm

Tuesday, a recall was issued for 1 million 28-tablet birth control packages manufactured by Pfizer.  According to the pharmaceutical company, a packaging error caused some of their oral contraceptive packages to have the incorrect numbers of active pills and sugar pills.

The recall affects Pfizer’s Lo/Ovral-28 and generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradoil birth control pills.  The packages are supposed to have  21 active hormone pills and 7 sugar pills, which need to be taken in order and at the same time every day in order to be the most effective at preventing pregnancy.

A statement from Pfizer reads, “As a result of this packaging error, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy.  These packaging defects do not pose any immediate health risks.”

The pills were distributed nationwide.  The Food and Drug Administration advises patients taking the recalled brands of Pfizer oral contraceptives to contact their doctor and start using other types of contraception immediately.
