Austin considers updating stoplights for safety

Posted on Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at 6:24 am

An Austin police officer responding to a call on Thursday caused an accident at a busy intersection.  Sources say the intersection was not fitted with an emergency light sensor, a device that controls the stoplight when it is triggered by emergency vehicles.  The officer was unable to change the light from red to green, and was forced to take a left on red, crashing into the Civic. The Austin police department reports that accidents of this nature are rare and in the past year there have only been three accidents of this nature.

A surprising 40 percent of Austin intersections aren't equipped with emergency light sensors.  The city is looking to update all lights so that they can include the device used to help emergency vehicles.  Police remind Austin drivers that no matter what color the traffic light is, it is always necessary to slow down and pull over to the right when emergency vehicle lights are flashing.  It is also important to keep the music in your car low so that you can hear sirens.
