UTHealth studies treatment for TBI in children

Posted on January 11th, 2011 No Comments

This month, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, also known as UTHealth, began a study to see if using cord blood stem cells could help to treat traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in children.  Phase I of the study is open for enrollment and will be conducted at the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

The study is open to 10 children between the ages of 18 months and 17 years that have suffered a traumatic brain injury and have saved cord blood with the Cord Blood Registry.  In addition, applicants must have suffered the injury within 6 to 18 months of applying.

Outcomes for children with traumatic brain injuries are typically more optimistic for children than adults.  Vice President of Scientific and Medical Affairs at CBR Heather Brown stated, “This study is at the forefront of research evaluating a child’s own cord blood stem cells’ ability to help facilitate the healing process after damage to nerve tissue in the brain”.

Yesterday, 11 people were injured in a terrible boating accident in Lewisville, Texas.  The accident occurred just north of Dallas near the Lake Toll Bridge around noon when one boat “T-boned” another.  Both boats in the accident were rented from the same boat rental company.  A Texas Parks & Wildlife Department spokesperson told reporters that alcohol was not involved in the accident.

The people injured in the accident were taken to five different nearby hospitals.  Three people had to be airlifted for serious injuries while the eight were transported via ambulance.  One 10-year old boy was the most seriously injured with a severe head injury.  He was having surgery in the evening at Cook Children’s Medical Center.

Should I take my injured child to a children’s hospital?

Posted on January 28th, 2010 No Comments

When children are involved in accidents, they incure many injuries that similar to adults' injuries. However, teating their injuries often requires a different kind of expertise and experience.

For this reason, when children are injured, adults are advised to take their children to children's hospitals. The doctors and surgeons at these hospitals often are more capable to treat small children's injuries.

In some cases, though, the need to get a child to a hospital quickly is more important than the need to take that child to a children's hospital. If this occurs, many people are advised to exercise their own judgment.

Many parents are too busy with work and other responsibilities to take care of their children 24-hours each day. For this reason, many parents put their children in daycare for multiple hours each day.

While daycares are generally intended to take care of children, some may not take enough precautions. For instance, if too many children are overseen by one person, then the chance of a daycare accidents is likely to increase.

While some of these daycare injuries may not preventable, others can be prevented and are the responsibility of the daycare center.
