Baby formula pulled after infant death

Posted on December 22nd, 2011 No Comments

Wal-Mart has pulled Enfamil Newborn, a powdered baby formula, from more than 3,000 of its stores after rising concerns of a possible contamination following the death of a 10 day old infant caused by a bacterial infection days after being given the formula.

The company’s manufacturer, Mead Johnson Nutrition, claims the shipment of formula had tested negative for the bacterium before it was shipped to stores. Wal-Mart has pulled the product as a precaution and there is not a federal recall in place at this time.

Currently, there is no proof that the formula caused the infant’s death. The family of the little boy took him to the hospital after he was displaying signs of a stomach ache and lethargy. Hospital tests revealed he had a rare bacterial infection and died days later after being taken off life support.

Lipitor recalled for uncharacteristic odor

Posted on November 1st, 2010 No Comments

38,000 bottles of 40 mg Lipitor were recalled recently by drug producer Pfizer.  Lipitor, a cholesterol fighting drug, is the best selling drug in the world.  In the first half of 2010, $6 billion of Lipitor have been sold.

This is the third recall Pfizer has issued since August, all for an uncharacteristic scent coming from the product’s bottle.  Researchers believe the moldy odor is caused by a chemical used in wood preservation. Wooden pallets used for product transportation and storage are often treated with the chemical.

Pfizer insists they do not allow their product to be exposed to the chemical but believe a third party used in packaging may be to blame.

Similac powder baby formula recalled

Posted on September 28th, 2010 No Comments

Last week, 5 million containers of Similac-brand powder baby formula were recalled for possibly containing small beetles or larvae.  The affected product was sold in 8 ounce, 12.4 ounce and 12.9 ounce plastic containers.

Executives from Similac-brand product producer Abbott Laboratories issued the voluntary recall after an employee found bugs in an area of their Michigan manufacturing plant.

Officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigated the plant and product and said that they do not believe there is any “immediate health risk” associated with the affected products.  However, affected products could possibly cause stomachache or digestion problems.

Egg recall expanded to 550 million

Posted on August 24th, 2010 No Comments

On August 13th, the Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of 228 million eggs from three Wright County egg farms in Iowa.  Then, last Friday the recall expanded to include all five Wright County egg farms and 360 million eggs.  Now, the recall has expanded to include over 550 million eggs from all Wright County farms and Hillandale Farms after investigators realized the two farms use the same chicken and feed.

The initial recalls came after several cases of salmonella food poisoning in connection with the eggs and epidemiologic evidence of salmonella bacteria at the farms.

The recalled eggs were distributed from Wright County and Hillandale farms on May 16th.  There have been 1,200 reported cases of salmonella food poisoning across the country.  Cases of food poisoning have been clustered in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin.

USDA recalls one million pounds of ground beef

Posted on August 10th, 2010 No Comments

On August 6th, the USDA and the California-based Valley Meat Company announced a recall of over one million pounds of ground beef.  The two decided on the recall after reports of E. coli containing products.

The affected products are mostly Valley Meat Company’s frozen ground beef produced between October 2009 and January 2010.  Seven people have been affected by the products, all with the same strand of E. coli 0157:H7.  The USDA warns consumers that the product could still be in their homes or grocery stores because it is frozen.

E. coli can be fatal to children, the elderly, and people with other health problems.  The USDA is investigating what caused the E.coli to contaminate Valley Meat Company’s products.

Kellogg’s issues voluntary food recall

Posted on July 9th, 2010 No Comments

Kellogg's company, under advisement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, issued a voluntary recall of four of their cereal products on June 29, 2010.

The products being taken off store shelves are Kellogg's Froot Loops, Honey Smacks, Corn Pops, and Apple Jacks.  Kellogg's became concerned after reports that the products had an uncharacteristic smell and flavor coming from the liner of the packaging.  While Kellogg's believes any risk associated with these products is very small, they advise people who have purchased a product before June 29th to refrain from eating it.

Foster's Food Fair IGA stated, "Until further correspondence from the manufacturer on this affected product, moving forward, it will not be available".
