1 in 7 hospitalized Medicare patients is the victim of a treatment mistake, according to recently released statistics from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Furthermore, the report estimates that 180,000 patients die from theses mistakes a year.

Medicare patients are said to most often suffer from treatment mistakes from receiving incorrect medications, urinary tract infections from catheters and excessive post-surgical bleeding.

President and CEO of the American Hospital Association Rich Umbdenstock stated, “While hospitals have made great strides in improving care, this report highlights that there is more we can do”. CNN Health suggests that for patients to reduce their risk of suffering from a treatment mistake, know your medications, always bring someone to the hospital with you and ask questions before allowing the use of a catheter.

The 5th State District Court of Appeals is reviewing a medical malpractice case involving an East Texas teen that passed away after receiving a kidney infected with rabies in a kidney transplant procedure.

Joshua Hightower passed away 48 days after the transplant as a result of complications from the disease. Four other transplant patients died from organs donated by the same donor. Doctors later found out that the donor had unknowingly been bitten by a bat and infected with rabies before he passed away.

Joshua’s parents filed suit against his two doctors and the hospital where he received the transplant. They claim the the surgery was unnecessary and premature and that doctors acted negligently.

The Medical Board of California is suing the fertility doctor who treated infamous “Octomom” Nadya Suleman. Suleman gained national attention after receiving fertility treatments which eventually made her pregnant and give birth to octuplets when she already had six children and no job.

Now, the Board is accusing Dr. Michael Kamrava of medical malpractice in two other instances. In the first instance, the Board is accusing Dr. Kamrava of implanting seven embryos in a 48-year old woman, putting her at high risk for serious birth complications. The woman became pregnant with quadruplets, lost one fetus, and gave birth to three babies via c-section delivery. One of the babies suffers from serious developmental delays. Furthermore, the Board alleges that Kamrava did not suggest the woman have a mental health evaluation or counseling before his treatments, which they believe to be an extreme departure from standard professional medical practice.

In the second instance, the Board accuses Kamrava of ignoring suspicions of the presence of ovarian cysts after looking over a patient’s cytology results. When the woman did not become pregnant, she sought out a second opinion only to find that she had stage three ovarian cancer.
