1 in 7 hospitalized Medicare patients is the victim of a treatment mistake, according to recently released statistics from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Furthermore, the report estimates that 180,000 patients die from theses mistakes a year.
Medicare patients are said to most often suffer from treatment mistakes from receiving incorrect medications, urinary tract infections from catheters and excessive post-surgical bleeding.
President and CEO of the American Hospital Association Rich Umbdenstock stated, “While hospitals have made great strides in improving care, this report highlights that there is more we can do”. CNN Health suggests that for patients to reduce their risk of suffering from a treatment mistake, know your medications, always bring someone to the hospital with you and ask questions before allowing the use of a catheter.
