W hotel closes after third falling glass panel accident

Posted on June 29th, 2011 No Comments

Officials with the W Hotel in Austin recently announced that the hotel will be closed until all glass panels on balconies at the hotel are replaced.  The announcement comes after a third incident at the hotel involving falling glass panels from balconies.

The third incident occurred on the same day a lawsuit was filed against the hotel over the first accident, which occurred on June 10.  The first time glass panels fell at the hotel they fell onto the hotel’s pool deck and injured several people at the pool.

Earlier this week, a second incident occurred in which panels fell from balconies located over 3rd street and onto cars below.  The next day, three more glass panel fell from the hotel’s south side.

South Austin duplex catches fire

Posted on September 21st, 2010 No Comments

A fire broke out at a south Austin duplex early yesterday morning.  Austin firefighters arrived at the 3300 block of Clawson Road at around 6 AM to see flames and smoke coming from the building.

The five people in the home were able to escape before firefighters arrived, however fire crews did have to rescue a pet ferret and snake.  The residents told officers that they were awoken after the windows in the back of the building broke from the fire.

Austin arson detectives arrived on scene after firefighters had stopped the fire to begin investigations.  Investigators currently believe that the fire was started on patio furniture on the duplex’s back porch.  The home’s residents are not smokers and are unsure of how the patio furniture could have caught fire.

Posted on September 1st, 2010 No Comments

This weekend, a South Austin apartment complex caught fire, injuring several and leaving 44 displaced from their homes.  Early Sunday morning around 5:30 AM, four apartments in the Bainbridge Villas on Southridge Drive became engulfed in flames, leaving approximately $840,000 worth of structural damage.  Eight other apartments suffered less serious damage from the fire.

Four people had to be taken to hospitals for their injuries, at least two of which suffered from broken bones after jumping from their apartment’s windows.  One resident was transported to the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for severe burning on her feet.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the fire.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the those who lost their homes and belongings in the fire.
