What are damages?
If you have suffered a personal injury as the result of another party’s negligence, then you may have the right to claim damages. Damages are forms of monetary compensation granted to the victim in a successful personal injury case. There are two main categories of damages:
- Compensatory (Actual) Damages: Money awarded to the claimant in order to compensate him or her for medical bills, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering.
- Punitive Damages: Money awarded to the claimant not to compensate him or her for losses, but rather, to reform and deter the offender from making the same decisions or taking the same actions in the future.
