Memory Loss Symptoms

Patients with head injuries often experience a loss of memory surrounding the events leading up to and following their injury. Memories of these events may never return. However, memory functionality eventually returns to normal in many patients.

There are two main forms of memory loss, also known as amnesia:

  • Anterograde Amnesia: In this form of amnesia, memories of new events are not stored permanently.
  • Retrograde Amnesia: In this form of amnesia, memories of particular past events cannot be recalled, but memories of new events are retained normally.

In some cases, a patient may experience both forms of amnesia at the same time. In addition to memory loss itself, patients with amnesia may also experience false recollections or disorientation.

Diagnosis and Treatment

In order to diagnose memory loss, doctors will perform a complete physical and mental examination on the patient. In addition, imaging tests including a CT or MRI scan may be performed – often leading to high medical bills.

There is no established treatment method for memory loss. Treatment strategies may include memory training therapy or the use of an electronic organizer to record important information. Medical researchers are examining potential medications for the treatment of memory problems, but as of yet there is no such medication available.
